Qsymia (Phentermine-Topiramate) in Austin, TX | Online Prescribing | TeleSlim Clinic

Qsymia (Phentermine-Topiramate) in Austin, TX: Online Prescribing by a Texas-Licensed Physician

Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release) is an FDA-approved once-daily capsule for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or with overweight and a weight-related condition, used with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity. Because it contains phentermine, it is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Through TeleSlim Clinic, adults in Austin and across the Austin metro area and Central Texas can see a Texas-licensed, DEA-registered, board-certified physician by video to learn whether Qsymia is appropriate for them.

At a glance

  • Form: a once-daily extended-release capsule that combines two medicines
  • Who it is for: Adults 18+ with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition, used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
  • Typical dosing: Treatment starts at 3.75 mg/23 mg once daily for 14 days, then 7.5 mg/46 mg once daily. If weight loss is not sufficient, your physician may increase the dose in steps up to 15 mg/92 mg. It is taken in the morning because it can affect sleep.

How Qsymia care works with TeleSlim Clinic in Austin

  1. Book a video visit. Complete a short health history, then meet Dr. Alatassi from home.
  2. Get a medical evaluation. She reviews your history, current medicines and goals to decide whether Qsymia or another option fits.
  3. Prescription to your pharmacy. If a medication is appropriate, your prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose, such as H-E-B, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart or Costco. TeleSlim Clinic does not dispense medication and does not offer compounded GLP-1 medications.
  4. Follow up monthly. Dose changes, side effect management, nutrition and activity guidance continue through monthly visits.

What Qsymia costs without insurance

TeleSlim Clinic is cash-pay: $99 for the first consultation and $99 per month for follow-up, with lower per-month rates on 3-month, 6-month and annual plans (see our cost guide for Austin). The medication itself is a separate cost paid at the pharmacy or through manufacturer programs. Qsymia is a brand-name medicine. Its cash price varies by dose and pharmacy, and manufacturer programs change, so ask your pharmacy for the current price. We can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement; reimbursement is not guaranteed. Read more about insurance and weight loss medication in Austin.

A controlled-substance medication

Qsymia is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Dr. Alatassi holds a Texas DEA registration, and prescribing follows federal and Texas law, which can include checking the state prescription monitoring program. Not everyone is a candidate, and your physician decides after a full evaluation.

Important safety information

Key safety information: Qsymia can cause birth defects, including cleft lip and palate, when taken during pregnancy. People who can become pregnant need a negative pregnancy test before starting and regularly during treatment, and must use effective birth control. It should not be used with glaucoma, an overactive thyroid, MAO inhibitors, or an allergy to its ingredients.

Common side effects include tingling in the hands or feet, dizziness, altered taste, trouble sleeping, constipation and dry mouth. Serious risks can include increased heart rate, mood changes or suicidal thoughts, acute eye problems (angle-closure glaucoma), slowed thinking, metabolic acidosis and kidney stones. Do not stop it suddenly; your physician will guide you. Results vary from person to person. Please read the full Qsymia prescribing information and discuss your own risks with your physician.

Compare your options

Qsymia is a once-daily capsule that combines two medicines and is an alternative to GLP-1 injections and pills. It carries pregnancy and mood-related precautions that your physician will review with you. See all options on our weight loss medications in Austin page.

Qsymia questions from Austin patients

Can I get a Qsymia prescription online in Texas?

If a Texas-licensed physician determines Qsymia is medically appropriate after a video visit, a prescription can be sent to your pharmacy. Not everyone qualifies.

Does TeleSlim Clinic sell Qsymia?

No. We do not dispense medication. Your prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose.

Do you offer compounded versions?

No. TeleSlim Clinic prescribes FDA-approved medications only.

Do I need an in-person visit first?

Under the federal telemedicine rules currently in effect, a DEA-registered, Texas-licensed physician can prescribe Schedule IV medicines after a video evaluation, without a prior in-person visit. Your physician also follows Texas law, and requirements can change over time.

Can I take Qsymia if I might become pregnant?

Qsymia can harm an unborn baby. If you can become pregnant, your physician will require a negative pregnancy test and effective birth control, and will ask you to tell them right away if you become pregnant.

Will insurance cover it?

TeleSlim Clinic does not bill insurance. Medication coverage depends on your plan and pharmacy benefit, so check with your insurer. We can provide a superbill for the visit fee.
